Somas valves have been used for many decades to control exhaust flow after combustion for large engines. Current requirements on fuel efficiency for marine and on-shore installations and environmental protection have increased the need for precise control gas and tight shut-off.

Somas exhaust GAS valves
Exhaust Gas valves are designed to handle exhaust gas from engines and have become increasingly used in the market. This suits us very well because we have a wide selection of exhaust valves and have had for many years.
Somas butterfly valve is the most suitable for handling exhaust gas. Somas unique valve shaft and flexible metal seat result in a very efficient control of the exhausts. The valves must handle difficult temperature cycles, soot and corrosive substances in the exhaust gas as well as high vibrations. It can be further customized with shaft sealing and/or bearing bushings to further enhance its performance, depending on the engine and fuel used.
The actuator and its accessories are more sensitive to high temperatures than the valve. Therefore, it is important to mount actuator and accessories away from the hot valve.
The actuators can be set in safe mode. Usually pneumatic actuators with accessories are used to achieve the desired functionality. Electric actuators can also be used, although this is much less common.

- Butterfly valves are used for pipe sizes: DN80-DN1200, or up to DN1600 (upon request).
- Ball segment valves are used for pipe sizes: DN25-DN65.
- The exhaust gas valves are equipped with metal seats, to handle the high temperature and sooth particles. These offer good tightness and maintains the good performance during a long period of time.
- The torque carries over from the actuator to the valve without delay, the same goes for the transfer between actuators and positioners.
- Service-friendly design where the metal seat can be replaced without the need to remove the actuator. Furthermore, the valves do not need to be completely disassembled to be repaired.
- Somas standard materials can handle temperatures up to 550 degrees Celsius.
- With special material, the valves can handle up to 700 degrees Celsius.
The most common area of application for Somas exhaust valves is pressure regulation in the engine’s inlet pipe. In certain situations, a bypass-valve is also included in a turbo-system.

By recirculating part of the exhausts back to the engines air/fuel inlet the amount of NOx released is reduced without decreasing the engine’s efficiency. Somas exhaust valves are used for turning off or controlling the recirculation.
In order to meet the requirements of Tier III related to NOx emissions, Somas exhaust gas valves are used to control the exhaust gas flow to these systems. The valves controlability and tightness throughout the entire temperature range of this process is of utmost importance to ensure the SCR and EGR-systems functionality.
When a ships engine is running at reduced speed, one of the turbo-chargers can be disengaged in order for the remaining to work at a higher exhaust gas pressure. The Somas valves are used to disengage the turbo charger.
